What is a Social Enterprise?

A social enterprise is a business enterprise which operates under not-for-profit objectives, some aim to achieve anything from recycling waste to operating small transport services for those in rural areas. Social enterprises put the employees and people before profit and due to low overhead costs can create markets and services that are self sufficient financially and highly efficient networks. Social enterprises have varying operational structures and currently in the UK there could be as many as a thousand, all being socially active. How effective could they be in problem solving in our current and continuing environmental crisis and society malfunctions?
